When Was Cadillac Founded?

So, when was Cadillac founded? In 1902, Henry Leland founded Cadillac. What, or rather who, was his inspiration for the name? That would be Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who some may know as the founder of the city of Detroit.

Just six years later in 1908, the Cadillac brand presented an idea that would change the automotive industry and the future of automobile production: interchangeable parts. This secured the honor of Cadillac becoming the first American auto to be awarded the Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club of England. Following this achievement, Cadillac adopted the slogan “Standard of the World.”

What Was the First Cadillac Ever Made?

Have you ever wondered what was the first Cadillac ever made? In 1903, Cadillac introduced the Cadillac Runabout, a 2-seater “horseless carriage” powered by a single-cylinder engine that produced a whopping 10 horsepower. The Runabout debuted at the New York Auto Show in August 1903 with a price tag of $850. Soon after, the Runabout was renamed the Model A. In 1904, the Model B was introduced with improvements like an extended front and transverse front suspension.

Explore the Cadillac Logo History

You can’t discuss Cadillac history without diving deep into the rich Cadillac logo history. Today, the iconic Cadillac wreath and crest is instantly recognizable on Weddington streets. Fittingly, the Cadillac logo was inspired by the same historical figure who inspired the brand’s name – Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The Cadillac logo has been redesigned no less than 30 times over the years; with that said, let’s take a look at the significance of the logo throughout Cadillac history:

  • 1906: The Cadillac crest was divided into two sections: a coat and shield. The shield symbolized how the founder’s family were descendants of the royal counts of Toulouse. On the coat were merlettes, a type of bird adapted from the martin. However, you will no longer see the merlettes on the Cadillac crest of today.
  • 1920: At this point in Cadillac history, the logo featured a tulip bulb wreath seen on the original Cadillac trademark, and the crown had nine points. Between 1920 and 1925, however, the number of points on the crown reverted from nine to seven.
  • 1933: In an effort to match the overall design of Cadillac automobiles at this point in time, wings were added to the crest and the crest was made detachable.
  • 1957: At this point, the Cadillac crest was redesigned with a long and wide orientation, which would continue straight through 1959. In 1959, the crown was all but removed from the crest completely.
  • 1963-Today: Today, the Cadillac crest remains sleek and modern with a no-fuss design. The crown is gone and there are no wings, just a simple chiseled crest with black, gold, red, blue, and silver lines throughout.
